about
Across almost all cultures, the simultaneously beneficent and brutal powers of nature have been, at one point or another, represented as nature gods or spirits—fickle and powerful, beautiful and dangerous. The Middle East has the jinn; Greece has the daimones; Scandinavia, the huldre; Japan, the kami; Ireland . . . well, Ireland has the sidhe, or sidheóg. All of these mythologized beings facilitate reverence and terror in the face of a dually nurturing and hostile reality, which makes a great source for a song: so, here's "The Sidheóg."
lyrics
[Unison]
The faerie fires are burning bright
Above the misty moor,
And distant music drifts
From ev’ry tangled ring of thorns.
‘Tis on such eves as these,
When moonlit shadows fall,
‘Tis on such eaves as these, you know,
The sidheóg come to call.
Spirits of the wind and water,
Spirits of the flame and fen,
Dark and air and earth incarnate,
Weavin’ things we cannot ken:
Pass this night, O ancient ones,
Pass this night, O ancient ones,
Pass this night, O ancient ones,
Our wards upon the wall.
[Two-Part Round]
The faerie fires are burning bright
Above the misty moor,
And distant music drifts
From ev’ry tangled ring of thorns.
‘Tis on such eves as these,
When moonlit shadows fall,
‘Tis on such eaves as these, you know,
The sidheóg come to call.
The sidheóg come to call.
Spirits of the rain and thunder,
Form between the flesh and soul,
Shadows of the sacred mother,
Crowned in beauty strong and cold:
Pass this night, O ancient ones,
Pass this night, O ancient ones,
Pass this night, O ancient ones,
Our wards upon the wall.
[Counterpoint and Harmony--Three Following Paragraphs Simultaneously]
The faerie fires are burning bright
Above the misty moor,
And distant music drifts
From ev’ry tangled ring of thorns.
‘Tis on such eves as these,

‘Tis on such eaves as these, you know,

Spirits of the flame and fen,
Dark and air and earth incarnate,

Pass this night, O ancient ones,
Pass this night, O ancient ones,
Pass this night, O ancient ones,
Our wards upon the wall.
The faerie fires are burning bright
Above the misty moor,
And distant music drifts
From ev’ry tangled ring of thorns.
‘Tis on such eves as these,

The sidheóg come to call.
The sidheóg come to call.
